For everyone
else...
I'm a seasoned
web developer with over 14 years of combined experience in Internet software, including
architecture, design, coding, testing, deployment, quality assurance and
technical support. My objective is to create, deploy and manage quality
web-based business applications – and mentor others to do the same.
I've spent the
last 8 years of my career designing, coding, testing and deploying business web
sites using object-oriented PHP and relational databases. I use a
model-view-controller (MVC) approach and I have built dozens of
enterprise-level web sites from the ground up. My experience has been split
evenly between back-end coding, database design and front-end
L, CSS and
JavaScript.
I've also had
the chance to debug, maintain and extend several legacy systems written in Java
and C#. Though my main expertise is in PHP, I understand and can work with
several object-oriented programming languages. (I would truly enjoy the
opportunity to work more with enterprise-level Java applications, web or
otherwise...)
Personally, I'm
the kind of guy who finds web development to be as much an artistic pursuit as
a way to make a living. I enjoy my work and I'm looking for a role where I can
make a real difference to a company's competence, quality and bottom line.
I expect to work
intelligently with a small group of talented people in a friendly, supportive
environment using state-of-the-art technologies and equipment. I expect to make
a difference. And I expect to have a great time doing it.

Experience:
Lead Software Developer
Rumor Advertising
Salt Lake City, UT
|
Jan
2010 – Present
|
Responsibilities:
- Custom web applications using Zend Framework, PHP and MySQL.
- Credit card payment gateway integration and validation using Authorize.Net.
- Legacy site maintenance, redesign and optimization.
Key Accomplishments:
- The entire web site of DailyBread.com.
- The online shopping system for Zoobies.com.
- The entire (multi-lingual) web site of Packsize.com.
Summary:
Rumor Advertising is my current employer and is a job that I like. I
have had the opportunity here to really sink my teeth into the latest
development platform for PHP – namely: Zend Framework – and create some truly
interesting business applications that I'm proud of.
Honestly, it is only the size limitations of Rumor that are causing
me to consider looking for other opportunities. Rumor is a small advertising
shop which seems content to stay small. While I am the lead developer, it is a
team of three. I have reached my potential here (in terms of both role and
salary) and find that I need a larger environment if I'm going to continue to advance
my career and personal goals.
Software Developer
Pacific WebWorks, LLC
Salt Lake City, UT
|
Sept
2008 – May 2009
|
Responsibilities:
- E-commerce platform integration and customization.
- Credit card payment gateway integration and validation.
- Custom web applications using Perl.
- Interchange e-commerce framework.
- Linux administration.
- Apache 2.x web server administration.
- Custom web design.
Key Accomplishments:
- Implemented real-time shipping, taxation and payment interface for Pacific WebWorks' premier online store site.
- Maintained and debugged legacy systems written in Perl.
- Learned Perl programming language.
Summary/Postmortem:
Pacific WebWorks is a small web marketing company whose main revenue
is derived from “per click” marketing of third-party web services. They
recently experimented with direct, online retail of name-brand golf equipment
and I was hired to implement it.
Unfortunately, sales on the web site did not match expectations and
further expansion on the project was canceled. With no immediate plans for
additional web development, my services were no longer required and I was laid
off.
Software Developer
AlphaGraphics, Inc
Salt Lake City, UT
|
Sept
2005 – Sept 2008
|
Responsibilities:
- PHP 5 (object oriented) coding, testing and quality assurance.
- Database design and development.
- Third-party web service integration.
- Apache web server administration.
- MySQL database administration.
- PostgreSQL database administration.
- Peer mentoring and training.
- Client support and training.
Key Accomplishments:
- Redesigned and recoded from the ground up AlphaGraphics' corporate web site AND all of its franchise web sites, over 250 unique web sites in all.
- Created the “send a file” functionality of all AG's store web sites, driving significant revenue for actual franchisers.
- Created the “get a career” functionality of both AG corporate AND all of its franchises, streamlining resume submissions and online applications for work at all locations.
- Created, deployed and maintained a suite of administrative tools for managing the content and presentation of all of AG's public web sites.
- Deployed and maintained a new content management system for all AG's internal documentation in intranet tools, drastically improving searchability and usability of their internal systems.
Summary/Postmortem:
AlphaGraphics is a multinational franchising company whose revenues
derive primarily from franchise royalties. I was initially hired on contract to
re-architect and redeploy both their corporate web site and all of their
individual franchise web sites. This I successfully did and was hired as a
full-time employee shortly thereafter.
AlphaGraphics was a fun, stable job for me and the people there made
it a great place to work. As time progressed though, their emphasis on web
services diminished and, seeing no clear career path for myself, I eventually
began looking for greater opportunities for myself. I left AlphaGraphics to
join Pacific WebWorks. In many ways, I regret that decision.
Web Developer
JujoSolutions
Lindon, UT
|
Oct
2002 – Sept 2005
|
Responsibilities:
- Small business web site architecture.
- PHP 4 (non-object oriented) web development and consulting.
- MySQL development and server administration.
Key Accomplishments:
- Created more than a dozen small business web sites.
- Learned the intricacies of web development, database integration and web security.
Summary/Postmortem:
JujoSolutions was a home-based company that my ex-wife and I started
when I was laid-off from NextPage, LLC. We primarily operated on personal
referrals for new business, creating one-off web sites for local small
businesses.
Even if it didn't make us much money, JujoSolutions did give me the
chance to really learn and hone my programming skills, and ultimately change my
career path. The experience I gained during this time was invaluable to me. I
was able to parlay my consulting experience from this stage of my life into a
full-time career at AlphaGraphics.
Technical Support Specialist
NextPage LLC
Lehi, UT
|
Mar
1997 – Oct 2002
|
Responsibilities:
- Deep-level technical support and customer relations.
- IIS/ISAPI programming and support.
Key Accomplishments:
- Became the lead technical support representative for all Internet and API-based products.
- Became the highest case-closer of my department.
- Mentored junior level Support Technicians.
Summary/Postmortem:
NextPage was the successor to OpenMarket, Inc. in possessing
ownership rights to the once great Folio software product line. They hoped to
be able to find a niche in the Internet market for Folio's free-text searching
techniques, which had, up until then, only been available through desktop
applications.
Unfortunately, they never did find their market – or, indeed, even
create an Internet-viable product to offer – and in 2002 (in the wake of 9/11
and the bursting of the "Internet bubble") they laid-off over 75% of
their workforce, including me. This led to a very dark period in my life where
I was virtually unemployed for over two years. However, as a result of this,
JujoSolutions was born.
Lead Software Test Engineer
OpenMarket, Inc
Provo, UT
|
Jan
1996 – Mar 1997
|
Responsibilities:
- Project Management.
- Team management.
- Training software testers in automated software testing techniques and tools.
- Managing metrics and statistics on bug tracking and resolution.
- Performing benchmark testing.
Key Accomplishments:
- Managed a team of five software testers for over a year.
- Created, delegated and implemented the testing plan for OpenMarket's flagship Internet-based text search product.
Summary/Postmortem:
OpenMarket, Inc. was a Boston-based company that made some original
forays into online banking software in the mid-late 90's. They acquired the
rights to the Folio product line in 1996 and I was brought on to test their
flagship Internet product which ported Folio's free-text searching
functionality to an online model.
OpenMarket eventually became disillusioned with the Folio product
line and sold it – and the company as well – to NextPage, LLC. Almost all of
the Provo-based employees transferred to NextPage with this acquisition,
including myself.
Technical Support Representative
Utah Education Network
Salt Lake City, UT
|
Jan
1995 – Jan 1996
|
Responsibilities:
- High-level customer technical support for Windows 3.x and Windows 95.
Key Accomplishments:
- Learned key customer relations skills, and patience.
Summary/Postmortem:
In those days, Utah Education Network had the goal to make the
Internet available to every public school teacher in the state of Utah. They
established several dial-in modem banks throughout the state and we (lucky
devils) got to be the front-line support for problems the teachers experienced
getting connected (which were not few).
Education:
Computer Science – University of Utah, Salt
Lake City, Utah – No degree (yet).
Self-taught in PHP and MySQL.
