Experimental Engineering Assembler
My transfer to Pontiac was due to a General Motors Corp. decision to consolidate all experimental engineering operations to the Detroit area, thus eliminating the Experimental Engineering Assembly trade at the Lansing site. At the Validation Center in Pontiac, I was assigned to the Body Shop, where I learned spot welding of the sheet metal parts required to fabricate prototype vehicle bodies. The Validation Center basically validates not the product itself, but the assembly procedures for the vehicle assembly line in the plant. In that regard, responsibilities included communication on a daily basis with engineering staff regarding problematic parts and/or designed assembly procedures as each of these related to the vehicle assembly line. (Contact Supervisor: Yes; Supervisor's Name: Eamon Power; Supervisor's Phone: Unknown: Plant Closed).

Experimental Engineering Assembler
Hired by Oldsmobile to work on the Toronado assembly line. Performed various assembly line duties. Transferred to Material Handling Department in early 1969 as a fork truck driver responsible for transferring parts to and from various assembly lines and machine floors throughout the plant; loaded and unloaded trucks and trains and maintained and inventoried stock storage areas. In 1980, I entered the Experimental Engineering Assembly trade as an Employee in Training (E.I.T.) and was issued my journeyman card on 8/5/1988. Responsibilities included preparing pre-prototype experimental automobiles, engines and components for testing and evaluation as a part of product development; communication on a daily basis with engineering staff regarding causes for product failure and/or success during tests and practical applications of design. I performed work on experimental engines until my transfer to the Pontiac, Michigan Validation Center in September of 1999. (Contact Supervisor: Yes. Supervisor's Name: No Name - plant closed. Supervisor's Phone: No phone – facility razed to make room for the new assembly plant.)
