Baxa is a medical device
manufacture. They have 4 locations all connected via private line MPLS and
Internet VPN. I was hired to improve network speed, reliability, and
security. . The existing infrastructure and process’s
required dramatic redesigning. Requirements dictated zero downtime as the
manufacturing process can not stop.
I devised plan to redesign the network and
security without any downtime. I was successful and below are the highlights
of the project.
Reengineered
the physical network, upgrading switch firmware
and certified each MPLS circuit. Purchased and installed a Cisco WAAS system
to increase MPLS throughput. Network utilization reduced by almost 90% in
some situations. Installed two site to site vpn tunnels to be used if needed.
OSPF was installed to assist with these new dynamic connections.
Designed Cisco 5505 ASA configuration for
home office deployment of Cisco VOIP phones and corporate network access.
Installed a Cisco NAC unit and attached
it to VPN and wireless systems.
Utilized both out of band and inline
configurations methods. Installed Snort IDS system and tied the reporting to
our in-house ticket system. Designed a web-proxy to block non business web
sites and provide reporting to HR. Utilized Linux, Squid, and Dansguardian.
Redesigned Cisco wireless system
utilizing Cisco 4402 controllers and a central manager. This wireless served
our manufacturing printing systems. Designed and installed a Citrix
application portal to allow remote access to critical systems.This system was
used by our remote sales personal utilizing the Apple Ipad. Designed reverse
proxy utilizing Linux and Squid for use by our Exchange email system. This
system increases email security. Monitored each system to ensure proper
operation and compatibility with existing systems.

CSLP / Nelnet had a requirement to assist
students, acquire, and maintain student loans via the Internet were required
as the company relied on internal systems and personal to manage the loan
process. The existing infrastructure and process’s required dramatic
redesigning.
I devised plan to redesign the entire
infrastructure without any downtime. The plan took months to develop and
years to implement. Through extensive meetings to map out processes, detailed
protocol analysis, and customer requirements the efforts of my team were
successful. Below are the highlights of the project.
Reengineered

Installed internal DNS system and updated IP addresses to ISO standards.
Insured all external data traffic utilized encryption. VPN tunnels with
schools and banks, software based encryption terminal emulation, and best
practices. Designed wireless network to assist training requirements and
provide wireless access to students.
Engineered security solutions – PIX, Linux IPtable,
Ipchains, Firewall implementations, log data analysis by Dshield / Symantec.
Snort, Squid proxy, and Honeynet security systems.
Monitored security alerts and reacted accordingly. Designed
and tested alert system based on Snort open source software. Syslog servers
and SQL databases utilized.
Designed, tested RSA multi layer authentication.
Integrated RSA with AD through LDAP.
Designed and managed MacAfee and Nod32 virus control systems,
Microsoft and Shavlik patch management systems.
Designed spam detection systems and reduced spam by 99.9%.
I utilized a two stage system to insure false positives were kept to a
minimum. Converted Exchange 5.5 to 2003.
Converted existing infrastructure, which involved server
consolidation, tape based backup systems, real-time data sync, and DR
rehearsals.

Boeing
and Farmland funded a project whose goal was to utilize satellite and
aircraft based imaging systems to provide detailed data for agriculture
applications. This system utilized CIA grade sensors. Because of the unique
security requirements and espionage factors, top level security was required.
The collected data was transmitted via downlink to Solaris servers for
processing and delivered to farmers and corporations. This systems
requirements involved full redundancy due to the vast amount of data
utilized. My responsibilities included networks, servers, communications,
delivery, security, and IT management. I entered the project at the beginning
so re-engineering was not required. The project took 5 years to complete and
the finished system was delivered to Boeing. Below are highlights of my
efforts.

aircraft sensors to clients. Designed computer monitoring systems and e-mail

controls, OS patches, monitoring of hacker web sites and e-mail spam.
