PROJECTS
Automated Cooling
Water Control Valve:
The cooling section of the Continuous Annealing Line needed to be
controlled more efficiently than the manual on/off valve being used. I
installed and commissioned a pneumatically controlled variable valve that would
open and close to regulate the temperature of the water to a certain set point.
Automated Siemens AC
Variable Speed Drives for Temperature Based Cooling Application:
Installed, programmed, and commissioned two Siemens AC variable speed
drives in the Jet Cool section of the Continuous Annealing Line. The drives
turn fan motors on and off automatically to regulate the steel strip
temperature as it exits the furnace section of the line.
Multiple Operator
Control Station Upgrades:
Many of the steel mill operator stations are old, rusty, and failing. I designed
new operator control stations; reusing some of the existing physical controls
and consolidating the other controls onto an HMI screen. I wrote new
programming for the HMI controls and updated existing programming per each
operator station’s requirements.
Automated Hydraulic
Pumps and Pneumatic Solenoids for Shear and Coil Car Controls:
The shear and coil car controls at the entry end of the Continuous
Annealing Line were out of date and failing. I automated the controls for the hydraulic
pumps that controlled a shear used to cut the steel. I also installed a new set
of pneumatic solenoid valves and automated them to raise and lower a steel coil
upon operator command using a push button.
Upgraded a GE Series 6
PLC to a GE 90-70:
Lead engineer. The Electrolytic Tinning Line #1 entry control PLC was out
of date and was no longer supported by the manufacturer. In order to avoid any
delays in production, the PLC needed to be upgraded to something newer. All of
the control logic from the Series 6 PLC was re-written in the 90-70 PLC. The
90-70 PLC was run in parallel to the Series 6 to verify the control logic
worked correctly. Then the new PLC was installed and commissioned.
