Job
Profile: -
I
am working in Armament Research and
Development Establishment, a premier lab of Defence Research and
Development Organization (DRDO),
Pune since Sep, 2004 as a Scientist ‘B’.
Professional
Experience: -
Organization: Defence
Research & Development Organizaton, Pune
Sep, 2004 – Till now
It
has been 18 months experience with DRDO. This organization is engaged with
development of competitive systems and technologies related to conventional
armament for land, sea and air warfare. Out of various projects handled by DRDO
I have worked for 2 major projects of Integrated Guided Missile Development
Program. These are one of the critical projects involving much of design,
analysis and research work.
Projects in DRDO:
Project 1: -
Team size- 18, 4 scientists and 14 technical officers.
NAG- it is 3rd generation
anti tank guided missile of fire and forgets type. This missile is having
capability to defeat ERA (explosive reactive armor) with double cassettes. It
means it has capability to defeat all main futuristic advance battle tanks.
Missile can function in many different modes.
Missile
is not a single unit. It is combination of many different sub systems. Each sub
system has unique role to play in functioning of missile. There are many
mechanical, many electronic, many electromechanical systems and many other
general units to ensure the right functioning of the missile.
Our
team was responsible for development of some of mechanical and electro
mechanical systems, which
ensures arming of the missile when it requires. It also ensures safety of
missile during transportation and handling. Definitely design constrains were
space, weight, reliability. Remember, reliability is very important
factor here. During war system failure is not affordable. At development phase
some critical technologies also developed. These new technologies give us edge
over other countries having same category missile, in functioning and in
reaction time.
Project 2: -
LWT -
Oct, 2005 - till now
Team
size- 12, 3 scientist and 9 technical officers
LWT (Light Weight Torpedo) is a new project it is under water guided
missile use to defeat ship submarine etc. it is having both ship and air launch
capabilities. After launch it enters into water up to some depth and then
cruises towards target with help of guidance and control systems. As this
missile has to travel in water and has to defeat ship or sub marine, these are
big targets as compare to tanks, so system requirement were different
here. Our team is working to develop a electro-mechanical unit which plays
major role to ensure safety of missile at handling, transportation. It also
generates an electric signal in controlled manner to arm the missile when
required. A new design, incorporating all latest development is in
research phase, which is likely to show its required results soon.
I
have conducted the following activities in above projects
·
Conceptual study of some of the components of
both missile systems under the guidance of senior scientists.
·
Preparation of model for approval of Ministry
of Defense.
·
Outlining of design of components and
preparation of final drawings.
·
Evaluation whether part can be manufactured
in house or to be bought out.
·
Resources provisioning.
·
Assigning specific work to each department.
·
Scheduling and sequencing of activities in
time scale.
·
Manufacturing or subcontracting of
components.
·
Quality control analysis of components
·
Modification of drawing in case of deficiency
in quality norms
·
Assembly of components
·
Testing of assembled component with other
missile systems
·
Modification of assembly components if
standard norms are not complied
·
Approval of project and handing over design,
drawing and manufacturing procedure to manufacturing unit of ministry of
defense.

Organization:
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Kanpur
(April 2002 – June 2002)
Hindustan
Aeronautics limited (HAL) is a
leading aerospace company of India engaged in design, manufacture and overhaul
of variety of aviation products from basic trainer aircraft to highly
sophisticated fighters, bombers, helicopters, transport aircrafts and other
aerospace products.
I
was assigned production department
of HAL-Kanpur. Production department has responsibility of planning and
scheduling and procurement of bought out items. It is sub divided into four
subdivisions.
1) Method engineering dept. 2) Production control Dept. 3) Shop engineering Dept.
4)
Tooling Dept.
Final
product releases through different stages of production. When demand comes to
customer’s service department, then sales order is released to particular
department. Decision is taken for self made components and bought out
components. Resources required for job to be completed are provisioned. Now
work is assigned to specific divisions. Sequencing of activities on tie scale
is to be done. Job preparation and loading is done by shop engineering dept.
Job is executed by manufacturing an assembly shop. On whole sequence
controlling is associated which also help on feed back mechanism.
As
example of job assignment I explored HPT-32
overhaul & assembly Dept. HPT-32 is a basic piston engine trainer
aircraft. It is fully aerobatic and can be used for a wide range of training
requirements of both military and civil users it offers a wide range of
operational flexibility, at minimum cost. It was powered by 260 HP six-cylinder
engine. Its flying controls are aileron control, rudder control, and elevator
control, flap control, indicating system. This dept. offers periodical
servicing daily inspection, first flying service; turn round service, last
flying service, 50 hrs, 200hrs, 400hrs services.
I
also got practical exposure of numerical control shop, which is need of today
for higher productivity, lower cast and more precise manufacturing; it is most
sophisticated form of automation for controlling machine tools, equipments or
processes.
Final
year project: -
Development of force measuring system
for biomedical application
(Dec 2003 to June 2004)
We worked to prepare a measuring system used
to measure force applied by ankle joint of human foot during walking. The
out-put data can be used by medical practitioners to accesses the different
problems associated with human body move. We started our project with a medical
survey to collect data corresponds to patients having severe injuries related
to bones. A mechanical model of our ankle and foot was prepared to study the
force variation while human body moves. The gait cycle, begin when one foot
contacts the ground and ends when the foot contacts the ground again, was
modeled considering all phase of load variation. Study of gait analysis data
proposed two different designs.
1)
Shoe type 2) plate type
Constrains
on design were cost, accuracy and reliability. Out of all available sensors
load cells were selected considering above-mentioned factors. Now market survey
was conducted and “EPOTCH high precision
compression load cells model no-LCD151” was purchased. With help of these
sensors, display unit and control unit a prototype model was prepared and
required data was generated. Collected data was compared with standard results.
A database was prepared for future reference. Also a program in C language was
written to plot the graph between force and time. It also displays the force
value in number form. This software gives direct idea of pressure variation so
no additional display unit was used which helps in cost of the over all system.
