Development of LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) Client
Language : C
OS :
Linux (2.4 kernel).
Duration : 6
Months
Team
Size : 2
Role :
Design, development and unit testing
Description
: LDAP is a lightweight protocol for accessing directory services, specifically
X.500-based directory services. This protocol is specifically targeted for
management applications & browser applications that provides read/write
interactive access to directories.
LDAP
is based on a client/server model running over TCP. LDAP server maintains a
directory information tree of entries, each entry containing a set of
attributes. The client first performs LDAP bind, which involves establishing a
TCP connection & sending authentication parameters (username, password) to
the server. Server looks up the directory for the user, authenticates it and
sends back response. The client can then update (add, delete, modify) the
server database or do a search based on some search criteria. At the end it
unbinds.
Development of RADIUS (Remote Access
Dial-in User Service) Client
Language : C
OS : Linux(2.4 kernel).
Duration : 7 months.
Team
Size : 5
Role : Design, development and unit
testing
Description
: RADIUS is an AAA (Authentication,
Authorization and Accounting) protocol for applications such as network access.
When a user connects to an ISP using a modem, DSL, cable or wireless
connection, he needs to enter his username and password. This information is
passed to a Network Access Server (NAS) device over the Point-to-Point Protocol
(PPP); then NAS acts as RADIUS client and passes on this information over UDP
to a RADIUS server using the RADIUS protocol. The RADIUS server checks that the
information is correct using authentication schemes like PAP, or CHAP. If
accepted, the server will then authorize access to the ISP system and select an
IP address, VPN parameters, etc. The RADIUS server will also be notified if and
when the session starts and stops, so that the user can be billed accordingly;
or the data can be used for statistical purposes. While RADIUS has a prominent
place among ISPs, it also belongs in any environment where central
authentication, regulated authorization & detailed user accounting is
needed.
