Project Title
: Noise Reduction Using Kalman Filter

Description :
The enhancement
of noisy signal is a challenging research field with numerous applications. In
our project we focused on speech signal corrupted by slowly varying, non-white,
additive noise, when only a corrupted signal is available. My role in the
project was to develop the hardware. First, the survey of speech enhancement,
identification and filtering techniques was done. Second, a new speech
enhancement algorithm based on Kalman smoothing, spectral minima tracking,
state-space identification was developed. The intended application of this
algorithm is the suppression of noise in a Speech signal . Its performance was
compared to the traditional methods. It is found that it can give better
results at the expense of execution speed. We used Kalman filter in the
suppression of noise signals. Kalman filter was selected as it had many
advantages over the conventional filters. The main advantage was that it was
able to remove the noise even in the high frequency ranges.

Description :
Pipes are virtual devices by which tasks
communicate with each other through the I/O system. Tasks write messages to
pipes. These messages can then be read by other tasks. Our aim was to develop
the user defined functions for initializing, creating the pipe and to perform
the basic input/output operations. My role in the project was to develop the
user defined functions for Opening, Reading
and Writing data from and into the pipe. This was done by providing access to
the message queue facility through the I/O system.
An
important feature of pipes is their ability to be used in a select( )
call. The select( ) routine allows a task to wait for input from any of a
selected set of I/O devices. A task can use select( ) to wait for input
from any combination of pipes, sockets, or serial devices.
