MAP VIEWER – A standalone map
navigation tool (Final Year Project):
Technologies Used: Java Swing
Team Size: 1
Duration: 6 months
Description: Map Viewer, is a highly
user friendly tool for navigating maps. There are some popular web services
like Google Maps for the same
purpose and their popularity speaks about their necessity and usability in
today’s world. However, to access these services, one must have access to
internet. Map Viewer, on the other hand, keeps all their virtues, but it runs
offline from the desktop, using locally stor
ed maps, and thus can be used by the users having limited or no access to the internet. The application logic is written in Java. Java Swing has been used for developing the user interface of the application. Map Viewer uses Mercator map projection for displaying the maps of spherical earth on flat-bed two-dimensional display screen. In this development, the map is built from several map tiles available among thousands of map tiles, in hundreds of directories. Each of the map tiles is an image of a very small part of the whole map with a pre-determined constant dimension. The application selects the required map tiles correctly, and builds a complete map by arranging them in a matrix. Map tiles are stored in local storage medium in a hierarchical directory structure based on zoom level, row number and column number of the map tile.
