Professional Experience
Independent Consultant on database application Mar
2011 to present
eBizSolutions.com – Paramus, New Jersey
Consulting and participating in the
creating, developing of a litigation support application for law firm
uses. The application stores evidentiary
documents in various formats, contains calendar feature to schedule, track and
project different phases of the case progress, maintains a comprehensive client
billing system, reports real-time costs and expenses for user-input time
period, and many other cutting-edge
features, such as case budgeting, cost
project, analyses of venue selection and jury profiling. (Details of the
application are confidential and proprietary).
The core application is created using
Visual Basic 6 (“VB6”) for its ease of maintenance and quick development. The
VB6 application uses the multi-tier configuration consisting database layer,
business layer (middleware in modular formats for its quick coupling and ease
of revision without the need of changing other layers) and the presentation
tier consisting of extensive GUI (“graphic user interface”). Since the program
is premised on Visual Basic 6, it is easily interfaced with the Microsoft Word,
Outlook, Sharepoint, etc. and it is
coupled with MS SQL Server 2008 as its backend database system. Within
the VB6 application, extensive automation programming invoking other Microsoft
Office Suite applications are used, e.g. an Excel application with user graphic
interface in the forms of ActiveX component and form controls, may request
information via an often-used ad hoc query to be retrieved from a MS
Access database.
The litigation application also marshals
the power of Windows API, automation add-ins and COM (“Component Object Model”)
add-ins as middleware storing business rules. All this ancillary programming is
written with Object Oriented theories in mind and the codes are stored in modules
and class modules for easy re-use and quick adaptation. For example, database
connection strings for different database platforms and query procedures are all
stored in one module. Depending on the calling functions, which may call for a
data result sets from a Microsoft Access or SQL Server 2008 or an IBM AS400,
the same module can respond and pass on the dataset back to the calling
procedures.
Part of the litigation application’s
analytic ability is to utilize many of Excel calculation and aggregation
features such as pivot table, charts and graphs to depict financial
information. It also has the capability to performing optimization using the
Goal Seek and Solver for advance mathematics. They are used to find the
optimized courses of actions, such as going full litigation or settlement and
perform many myriads of cost and benefits analysis for making business
decisions given the unknown variables and associated risks.
Claims / IT Support Supervisor

2002 to Feb 2011
Sompo Japan Insurance
Company of America – New York, New York
Supervise, develop and maintain company-wide business intelligence reporting
functions for various departmental, external entities and upper management
use. Design and implement company-wide graphic
user interface BI applications for extracting data results from company
back-end databases and made available to end users via front end programs using
Visual Basic, ASP, Microsoft office
applications and others. Use ODBC technology and MS Office Query to extract and
distribute real time business intelligence and company data from the back end
data sources to the front-end company
users.
Key Achievements:
·
In 2011, created, implemented
and tested the data-retrieval end of a dynamic business intelligence web
application using MS SQL 2008 as the backend database and ASP codes for programming the application logics and
database retrieval. I played the key role in the “ETL” process and in the
normalization of the relational for optimum performance over the network and in
query execution. Working with the webmaster
using Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 as the interface for the generation of web pages.
The application enables our insured account Honda Motorcycle of America to view
and retrieve loss data and number of claims and their dollars amount among
their hundreds of motorcycle dealers/warranty repair services in the U.S.
The application can also perform drill-down
analysis on a real time basis at the web and to download and produce business intelligence reports in
Excel format with many GUI (“graphic user interface”), e.g. Microsoft form
controls to enable the end-used to further perform quantitative analysis in
charts, graphs and financial summaries.
o
I was the project leader of a
team of three, consisting Sompo’s database administrator, a webmaster and a
consultant . I was instrumental in the
conceptualization of the application and the lead contact person with the
client’s IT members.
o
Aside performing the database
logic programming, I also conducted the “ETL”, the cleaning and scrubbing and
mapping of the client’s data in conformity with our back-end IBM AS/400.
·
2008 to 2010, assisted the IT
department staff in developing, implementing and verifying various
data-retrieving algorithms and ad hoc queries,
dash-boarding when the company migrated
to Oracle’s business intelligence (“BI”) application in 2010 and collaborate
with IT team leaders using MS SSRS to test and develop reporting applications .
o
I was the testing programmer to
insure the SQL queries and resulting dataset of the migrated applications
conform and yield consistency to our
requirements and the IBM AS/400 archival databases.
o
I was assigned to develop and
training program for the Oracle BI application for the company. The objectives
were to instruct company users how to use the comprehensive dashboard,
query-criteria selection, report templates, , aggregate financial summary,
automatic email distribution list and many others. As part of training, I also created detailed
“user manual” with screen shots, instructions, stored examples, etc, both in
written and video formats. I also acted as a backup help desk person for our
Claims Department for the Oracle application.
·
2005 to 2009, provided leadership and
supervision, and programming assistance to the IT department staff in developing,
implementing and verifying various data-retrieving business intelligence
applications. Designed financial algorithms
and ad hoc query formula. Performed
lead role in the continuous development, modification and enhancement of the
in-house BI application.
·
2002 to 2009, performed
supervisory role in the development of a multi-tier in-house Panel Defense Counsel database using
MS Access as the backend, Com+ as
business layer storing company rules and proprietary information, and MS
Access 2007 as presentation/interface layer,
tracking law firms, firm rates, attorney staffs, areas of expertise,
counties of practice, claim defense data and statistics, current and historical
service charges summary and details, with rich user interface to query firm’s
areas of experts, locality, attorney staff, rates and firm’s rankings, client
portfolio, etc. The application was created with Visual Basic 6 and Visual
Basic Application (VBA) languages.
·
From 2005 to 2010, performed
leadership role in the creation of Microsoft
Excel-based automated billing audit procedures using VB6 & VBA languages for
reviewing claim handling fees of third-party vendor/claim administrator, e.g.
Crawford, Hartford SRS, Esis, etc. From
2005 to present, through the use of the billing audit program, the company was
able to save consistently an average of $300,000 plus a year by detecting and
reducing claims fees that are duplicates, miscoded, or incorrectly billed to a
higher fee brackets.
·
2002 to 2005, played a lead
role in creating, maintaining, upgrading a department-wide reporting
application based in Microsoft Excel for generating insureds’ loss runs, policy
premium/loss abstracts, claim payments and litigation status reports,
premium/loss analyses, policy threshold analysis, etc., using MS Excel, Visual Basic 6 & VBA codes, OLEDB and ODBC technology to marshal the
internal operatives of IBM AS/400, the company legacy database, to create
files, download query views and manipulate metadata such as dates, strings and
create mathematic algorithms for premium/loss ratios, casualty loss financials
and policy coverage threshold analyses.
·
Created and developed
stand-alone Microsoft Excel applications using VBA coding with rich client
layer containing drop-down boxes, input text boxes, command buttons, etc that
allow users to key in query parameters
and to extract and bring back data result sets for “slicing and dicing”
and to generate richly formatted reports and charts for distribution.
·
Designed modules to enable full
integration with Microsoft Office through the use of ODBC technology and VBA
coding that enabled upper management staff to extract essential data from
AS/400 onto user-friendly Excel interfacing applications for analyzing
premium/loss ratio, historical data comparisons, identifying policies early on
that have above industry loss trend, e.g. certain warehouse of an insured that
has higher than average workers' compensation claims.
·
Used Rushmore indexing
technology to test and optimize query extract time so as to reduce load on
back-end servers and speed up upload time of front-end applications.
