Addendum:
Here is a brief description of my Tooling
Engineer activities and responsibilities for a new mold :
Initial
project activities:
·
Work with the Product Engineer
to determine part improvements for mold ability and manufacturing.
·
Determine if prototype tooling
is required. If required request quotes, release purchase requisition and
attend prototype mold trial.
Parts Release:
·
Complete a mold RFQ (request
for quotation) form.
·
Request mold quotations from no
less than 3 (normally 6) tool vendors.
·
Compile mold quotations and
submit with my choice of tool vendor to management for approval.
·
Complete and submit a purchase
requisition to Purchasing for contract release.
Mold Design & Construction:
·
Review and approve mold design
to ensuring all features are to our standard and RFQ.
·
Receive weekly mold
construction updates until mold construction is complete.
Mold Sampling and Trials:
·
Tool vendor will perform an
initial mold trial (TO) and make necessary corrections as required. Samples
will be submitted from each mold trial until all corrections are complete.
·
I will attend the “T1” mold
trial to review all aspects of the mold function, construction and process.
Samples from this trial will be sent to Product Engineer for review of function
and inspection results.
·
Mold will be re-sampled and
corrected until PE accepts.
·
Upon acceptance a 4 hour mold
trial will be run with a TE present.
·
Mold will be approved for
transfer after successful completion of the mold trial.
Mold Approval:
·
PPAP run is made at the end
molder and dimensional data is submitted for approval.
All molds are tracked on a detailed Excel spreadsheet.
