I like to research and resolve issues, I
learn things very quickly and can create easy to read end user
documentation. I also supply any end
user training that would be applicable, individually or in group settings, by
direction or hands on. I like to
evaluate processes and do whatever I can for process improvement.
I have been at Norwich University for 15
years. In that time frame I have grown
professionally and personally. I went
from helping students and parents with being the first line of contact within
the Student Financial Planning office to supporting and providing Help Desk
Support to the entire university, via email, telephone and walk-in customers.
Seven years ago, I was approached with
moving to the Administrative Computing department within IT, from the Help
Desk, at which point I took on the role of Technical Process Specialist
Registrar’s Office aka Functional Area Specialist. This position, along with 3 others were
created based on a mandate by the President of Norwich University to make our
database (Banner by SungardHE) strictly vanilla and move away from all
possible “homegrown” processes. Since
that time I have made many improvements and moved away from the “homegrown”
processes, to name a few: National
Student Loan Clearinghouse, Withdrawal Process, Web Registration, Student Time
Status, Batch compliances for our ROTC branches, and Graduate School and
Undergraduate Schools populations, Mid-Semester Academic Letters, End of
Semester processes, including academic warning letters and Cohort Load
Process. I’m very proud of my
accomplishments and the things I believe I have done to make the university
better. However, at this point, as much
as I love the position I’m in several management changes and lack of
management and accountability has made me rethink my goals and start seeking
other opportunities.
In addition to my responsibilities as
Functional Area Specialist, in June 2008 we experienced downsizing and my
immediate supervisor, who was also our Argos Administrator (reporting tool by
Evisions) was let go. At that point I
was asked to take over this role, as I had been the back up. Upon taking over this role, I am
responsible for weekly windows updates on a test/development and production
server, applying any upgrades to the development server and working out any
bugs and then applying the upgrade with fixes to production, moving reports
from our development server to production, creating report creation policies
for our report writers/programmers and upholding those policies, all Argos
security and account creation for end users.
I have also started to work on a separate clone server which I am the
only one who has access for the means of installing Argos and setting it up
in the event something happens and we need to completely restore from a
backup. This role is something I would
like to have more time for but unfortunately that is not the case and I feel
frustrated, that what I do is the bare minimum to keep it going
smoothly. I know there are many
features within Argos that could be implemented, but just do not have the
time to do them. It has been expressed
in my performance evaluations for the last 2 years going on 3 that if the
university opened this position to be a separate position I would go into
this position. I don’t believe that is
ever going to happen for two reasons, one with the way the budget is and
handled and the thinking of “why do we need that position it’s getting done”,
the position will not be created and two my immediate supervisor and his
supervisor know they will not be able to replace what I do in both of my
roles.
