Campaigns include:
Morning-After
Pill Campaign
– Was a leader in a three-year, national campaign to get over-the-counter
access to the Morning-After Pill (MAP). We worked in coalition with groups in
New York City to pressure the Food and Drug Administration to base its decision
on science rather than right-wing politics. In the course of this campaign, I
helped to gather pledge signatures from women across the country, organize
call-in and letter-writing campaigns, hold speakouts in three states, and sit
in at the FDA headquarters in Rockville, Maryland. I also testified before the
FDA medical advisory committee in Washington D.C., was part of a live
television debate on FOX news, and joined a class action lawsuit against the
FDA. Our campaign won a partial victory last year with the decision to make MAP
available behind-the-counter with an age restriction. Our lawsuit is still
seeking full, over-the-counter access for all women.
2004
Presidential Election –
Participated in a door-to-door canvassing campaign to turn women out to vote.
Also organized an election rally with representatives from local chapters of
the NAACP, ACLU, Gay-Straight Alliance, and Graduate Assistants United. The
campaign was successful in recruiting several new people who went on to become strong
activists in our NOW chapters.
