Assisted in final design work for programmable timer models.  Work consisted of designing development printed circuit boards for software developers, creating/checking parts lists, initial turn-on and debug of prototype circuit boards.

(One month contract):  Part of three-man team investigating flight problems with LGB (Laser Guided Bomb) for Lockheed Corp.  Examined all aspects of LGB’s design (printed circuit boards, hardware, software) to understand bomb’s occasional target misses during on-going trials.

·         Hamilton-Sundstrand (APU Division, San Diego, CA)  
(Feb. 2004 – Sept. 2004 and Feb. 2005 – Sept. 2005)

Re-designed APU’s 80C186-based controller board.  Expanded program and data memory; changed design to use Flash memory.  Identified and corrected numerous design flaws in existing printed circuit board.  Was asked to stay on to solve other persistent system problems.  Last assignment involved verification testing of three CPLDs and an FPGA for FAA/RTC (Canada) certification as well as designing the test PCBs.

Independent Consultant (DBA) SR3 Engineering, Inc.                                                
Consulted/contracted with the following companies:

·         Emory University
Designed mouse-tracking system for Parkinson’s disease investigations.  Tasks included PCB design/debug and writing software. 
Processor: Intel 8051.

·         Spectrx Corp
Assisted in preparing non-invasive bilirubin tester (BiliCheck) for production.  Tasks included writing software for battery charger unit as well as check-out/production test procedures for the BiliCheck product. 
Processor: Motorola 68C912.

·         Bel-Tronics
Wrote user interface software for a 900 MHz phone with Caller ID and two-line LCD display.  Interface functions included all edit, recall, store and dial functions for four directories.  All programming done in assembly language running under a Rockwell RTOS. 
Processor: Rockwell C18 (6502 variant).




·         Intelligent Interfaces
Modified/enhanced printed circuit boards and firmware for several of my previous designs (see Intelligent Interfaces, below) allowing compatibility with newer Hewlett-Packard printers and plotters.  All programming performed in each processor's respective assembly language.

Designed debug pod for ‘186 type processors.  Added to company’s supported processors.

·         Telesync
Assisted in  preparing “Switched 56-to-ISDN” converter for production.

·         Scientific Atlanta
Designed hardware and wrote software for a Distant Teaching System.  Took over project badly in need of supervision and focus.
Processors: Microchip PIC family processors from the 16xx and 17xx families.

Conklin Corp.  - Sr. Prod. Dev. Engineer                                                        

o    Redesigned microprocessor interface portion of the C8000 DSL system saving $35 of a $250 total parts cost.  Oversaw/debugged the new PCB layout for the redesigned product.
o    Designed and supervised the implementation of a fail-safe program for field updates of the flash memory based R/T units.
o    Provided on-going support for DSP based design solutions for incompatibilities between the C8000 DSL system and V90 modems.
o    Processors: Intel 8051, 80151 and Texas Instruments 6701 and 5400 series DSP parts.

Intelligent Interfaces – Half owner/Product Design Engr.                          


o      Responsible for all aspects of product designs including PCB designs, hardware and software.
o      Designed production test procedures and test software.

o      Products included HPIB/IEEE-488/Centronics interface converters, “Smart” buffers for Hewlett-Packard plotters and printers, memory boards for HP scientific computers.

Quadram – Senior Engineer                                                                               

o    Designed color and monochrome video boards as well as several variations of multifunction boards with I/O and memory for the PC.  Oversaw PCB layout and performed all debugging and bringing up the software.
o    Processors: designed products for the new IBM PC computers: Intel 8088, 8086 and 80186 parts.

Scientific Atlanta – Senior Engineer                                                                
                                   
  • Developed microprocessor based monitor and control equipment for satellite earth stations.
  • Designed hardware and wrote software for a remote control unit using the Vertical Interval of a TV signal for sending in-band control commands.
  • Processors: Motorola 6800, Intel 8085.
