Coast Guard Electronic Support Detachment, New Orleans, LA

Senior Information Systems Technician / Assistant Supervisor of the U.S. Coast Guard Electronic Systems Support Unit New Orleans.  Responsibilities include, Senior Technician / Supervisor providing Administrative and Technical oversight of 30 active duty Information Systems and Electronics Technicians.  Provide System Administration, System Support, System Analysis, Project Planning, Project Implementation, and Configuration Management of a 40 Server Network comprised of 1200 workstations serving 2000 users located at 40 different locations from Gulfport, Mississippi to Lafayette, Louisiana; all the while ensuring a 99.97 percent availability rating in accordance with established Service Level Agreements.  Independently planned and performed numerous shore and shipboard computer system migrations which entailed building servers to Windows Server 2003, configuring Exchange, DHCP, WINS, Windows Deployment Services, and imaging desktop computers and laptops to Windows XP Professional and Windows Vista Enterprise.  Perform Executive Level customer support, and frequently tasked with resolving the more difficult customer support issues requiring expertise in technical and customer relations areas.  Frequently author administrator and user documentation for new implementations and or common user guides for new applications.  Provide Command, Control, Communications, Computer, and Information Technology (C4IT) assistance establishing Continuity of Operations Plans (COOP) to ensure that the Coast Guards critical missions (Search and Rescue, Marine Environment Protection, and Law Enforcement) can continue to operate following natural or manmade disasters. Regional Systems Manager responsible for the maintenance of the Coast Guard Computer System for 35 afloat and ashore units throughout the First Coast Guard District’s Area of Responsibility (AOR).  Spearheaded the replacement of 700 computer workstations and 30 server upgrades.  Devised a detailed deployment plan to minimize the impact on operations by requiring much of the labor to be completed during non-business hours and weekends over a several week period.  Selected by the Coast Guards Telecommunications and Information Systems Command to field test numerous versions of the Coast Guard Standard Workstation Image (Window XP Professional and Windows Vista Enterprise), detailing problems and providing crucial information and recommendations that were incorporated prior to Coast Guard wide implementation.  As a first responder to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, I was relocated to Bayonne, New Jersey to establish an Incident Command Post which provided Coast Guard assets with electronic communication resources necessary to manage personnel engaged in the World Trade Center search and recovery efforts.  This required the installation and termination of 500 feet of twelve strand multi-mode fiber optic cable which expanded the Coast Guards Data Network to the Atlantic Strike Team’s contingency trailers.  In addition to installing cabling, assisted in the installation of a prototype wireless telecommunications system, Cellular Digital Packet Data which utilized the cellular telephone network to provide 30 Coast Guard boats with offshore Coast Guard network connectivity permitting access to electronic mail, web, and organizational messages and it also transmitted Global Positioning System data so that the Incident Commander could view real time tactical data and CG vessel locations through a web-enabled Geographic Information System similar to Google Earth.  Selected as Coast Guardsman of the Quarter, nominated for Enlisted Petty Officer of the Year, and Awarded the Coast Guard Commendation Medal for my efforts
