As a first responder to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, I
was relocated to Bayonne, New Jersey to establish an Incident Command Post
which provided Coast Guard assets with electronic communication resources
necessary to manage personnel engaged in the World Trade Center search and
recovery efforts. This required the
installation and termination of 500 feet of twelve strand multi-mode fiber optic
cable which expanded the Coast Guards Data Network to the Atlantic Strike
Team’s contingency trailers. In addition
to installing cabling, assisted in the installation of a prototype wireless
telecommunications system, Cellular Digital Packet Data which utilized the
cellular telephone network to provide 30 Coast Guard boats with offshore Coast
Guard network connectivity permitting access to electronic mail, web, and
organizational messages and it also transmitted Global Positioning System data
so that the Incident Commander could view real time tactical data and CG vessel
locations through a web-enabled Geographic Information System similar to Google
Earth. Selected as Coast Guardsman of
