Design – Technical expertise encompassed an understanding of mechanisms, hydraulics, optical systems, thermal systems, structural analysis, and composite design. Supervised design teams totaling 2 to 25 design engineers.  Designs were as complex as space flight instrument consisting of 13 reflective optical elements, focal planes, space radiators and heat pipes to actuators (hydraulic & electro-mechanical) to EMC mechanical enclosures.  Engineering drawings and specifications generated includes ICD, requirements, assembly, and component documents for a variety of electro-mechanical systems.  Also, designed spacecraft configurations, circuit card assembly, optical and laser mounts, analog electrical (TWTS), electronic packaging.  Fabrication methods included CNC machining, castings, injection molding, brazed and welded assemblies. Design software utilized SolidWorks 2012, Pro/ENGINEER r2001, IDEAS MS6, AutoCAD ( r14 and lite) and CADAM.

Analyses – supervised as many as 10 thermal and structural analysts.  Performed dynamic, stress, and heat transfer analyses using finite element software and hand calculations.  Dynamic analyses consisted of vibration (modes and frequencies).  Stress analysis consisted of static, shock, modal response and differential thermal expansion.  Heat transfer included conduction, convection (heat exchangers) and radiation (solar and IR).  NX NASTRAN v 7.0, ANSYS, PATRAN, FEMAPV10.1, COSMOS, SolidWorks simulation and MathCAD executed.

Test – Coordinated vibration, thermal, pressure drop, shocks, optical, vacuum and stress tests.  Designed data acquisition systems and test fixtures.  Compiled and reduced the acquired data.  Advised needed design improvements identified by test results. Medical protocols for verification and validation testing generated.  Feasibility and laboratory test reports supplemented design files.

Materials – Expert knowledge of metals (i.e. aluminum, steel, copper, zinc, titanium, magnesium, AlBemet), composites (i.e. polyester, vinyl ester, epoxy, phenolic, polyimide, polyamide, polypropylene), Ceramics (i.e. Alumina, Beryllia), Polymers (i.e. Carbonate, nylon, PVC, ABS, propylene, ethylene)
