Design – Technical expertise encompassed an
understanding of mechanisms, hydraulics, optical systems, thermal systems,
structural analysis, and composite design. Supervised design teams totaling 2
to 25 design engineers. Designs were as
complex as space flight instrument consisting of 13 reflective optical
elements, focal planes, space radiators and heat pipes to actuators (hydraulic
& electro-mechanical) to EMC mechanical enclosures. Engineering drawings and specifications
generated includes ICD, requirements, assembly, and component documents for a
variety of electro-mechanical systems.
Also, designed spacecraft configurations, circuit card assembly, optical
and laser mounts, analog electrical (TWTS), electronic packaging. Fabrication methods included CNC machining,
castings, injection molding, brazed and welded assemblies. Design software
utilized SolidWorks 2012, Pro/ENGINEER
r2001, IDEAS MS6, AutoCAD ( r14 and lite) and CADAM.
Analyses – supervised as many as 10 thermal and
structural analysts. Performed dynamic,
stress, and heat transfer analyses using finite element software and hand
calculations. Dynamic analyses consisted
of vibration (modes and frequencies).
Stress analysis consisted of static, shock, modal response and
differential thermal expansion. Heat
transfer included conduction, convection (heat exchangers) and radiation (solar
and IR). NX NASTRAN v 7.0, ANSYS, PATRAN, FEMAPV10.1, COSMOS, SolidWorks simulation
and MathCAD executed.
Test – Coordinated vibration, thermal, pressure
drop, shocks, optical, vacuum and stress tests.
Designed data acquisition systems and test fixtures. Compiled and reduced the acquired data. Advised needed design improvements identified
by test results. Medical protocols for verification and validation testing

Requirements specifications for the robot arm and SOW for external

planning, resourcing and budgets were generated. Successfully developed a low cost reliable
integrated cutting system mechanism that: provided simple cutter insertion and

pressure, force, displacement or vibration) needed monitoring and why. Instrumentation included analog and digital
