SPECIAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
2010 Project manager for the erection of an 85
foot radio tower to be used by local communication providers.
2009 Designing enhanced defrosting system for
energy efficient refrigerator.
2008 Designed the electrical circuits and
mechanical layout for a 8kW mobile, high voltage power supply from concept to production in 3 months. The power supply
was a high density, 50 W/cubic inch DC/DC converter with a high voltage (10 kV) output. 12 supplies
were manufactured and delivered to customer for final evaluation.
2007 Managed the development and prototyping of
very energy efficient refrigerator. The major saving is the
use of outside air for the cooling.
The compressor and condenser are cooled by outdoor air and therefore working
more efficiently, and are not used
during the colder winter months. The refrigerator is market for small and
medium
commercial and for large residential
users.
2004 Designed identification system for wire
harnesses to assist final inspection. The system was developed
as a means to simplify inspection of
17 similar connectors correctly placed in their respectively location
without a need to read
identification tags. The system was implemented in embedded computer systems
used
for fire controls of naval weapons.
2002 Designed and built automated Corner
Frequency test system for gyroscope manufacturing. The tester
replaced an “adjust for correct
image” to a direct digital readout thereby totally eliminating operator
judgment
errors.
2001 Developed 12 kW PM propulsion motor to be
integrated into wheel assembly for Automatic People Mover.
1999 Simplified electronic control unit to
increase reliability in redundant heating system. A computer was
replaced with a simple IC, removing
some unnecessary “precision” in timing between the redundant
boilers. The change was a cost saving
as well as a reliability improvement.
1998 Reconstructed and rebuilt old Victorian
house totally destroyed by fire from photos and historic records.
The
reconstructed house had an assessed value of $475,000. The original house was
purchased in
1997 for $220,000. Trained the
majority of the staff on the premises while supervising the operation.
1993 Successfully designed active filters, power
supplies and amplifiers to operate in high temperature 250°C
(482°F) environment. The project
required tight cooperation with semiconductor manufacturer to find
feasible components and a good
material knowledge to find suitable material for interconnections.
1988 Designed high density (50W/cubic inch) high
voltage (3 kV) power supply for weapon application. The design
succeeded due to a thorough
knowledge of switching technologies and
available magnetic materials. The supply
is used as the charger for a high
energy initiator.
1988 Designed high energy initiator to replace
mechanical barriers and explosive interrupters in safe-and-arming
devices.
1987 Designed the turnstiles presently used
system-wide in the New York City transit system. The turnstiles
represented
a new, unique and simple way of reducing fare evasion. The reduction in fare
evasion was
estimated to be approximately
$300,000/day ($60 - 75M/annually. The fare was $1 at the time.)
(New York Times, July 19, 1987).
1986 Designed token compartment for turnstiles
in the New York City transit system to reduce break-ins. Achieved a total elimination of break-ins
eliminating $1.5M/annual losses. The design was made after a study of methods used at the break-ins.
1985 Redesigned controller for solid state LASER
with a 75% reduction in production cost and a 5 times
reliability improvement. The circuit
replaced was designed from various book examples. It was replaced
with a simplified circuit designed
around the “real” application.
1985 Simplified control equipment for burn-in
system to meet budget goals. Achieved a $200,000 (70%) cost
reduction. The system with
individual controllers for each burn-in position was replaced with a
central electronic controller that,
by a scanning procedure, controlled all 1024 burn-in position.
1984 Redesigned chemical cleaning procedure to
improve bonding yield of LASER dies. Yield increased from <50%
to >99%. This had major positive
effect on the LASER production.
1983 Designed and manufactured small but
efficient (1½ “) 160 MHz antenna for mobile, hand-held transmitter for Swedish security company. This antenna replaced
a telescoping antenna not suitable for the application.
1982 Designed power supplies with low
capacitance to ground to replace batteries in noise critical equipment.
The
supplies were requested to reduce the cost of maintenance due to frequent dry
cell replacement.
1981 Developed and built controls for for
automatic start-up and shut-down of complex ultra-high vacuum system used
for molecular beam scattering
spectrometer.
1978 Designed ultra low noise power supplies and
controls for electron spectrometer to improve noise and resolution.
Achieved .2 meV resolution, best
resolution in the world reported at the time.
1977 Design sample manipulators for ultra-high
vacuum system.
1976 Advised
and implemented the use of silicon detector to improve detection yield
of soft X-ray in ESCA
spectrometer with major increase in
signal-to-noise ratio. This enhanced the sensitivity of ESCA spectroscopy so it
could be used in new
applications.
