Machinery / Marine Engineering First Class Petty Officer, United States Coast Guard, Nov 2001 – June 2011
Military assignments on board the USCG Cutter Sherman, USCG Cutter Hammer, USCG Sector South East New England, and USCG Vessel Board and Security Team.  Titles and responsibilities include but not limited to Crew Supervisor, Construction Deck Crane Operator; Annual Yard Availability Coordinator; Hose Shop Supervisor; and a graduate of U.S. Coast Guard Machinery Technician School.


 Engineering and Leadership Experience
· Led the renovation of work to a 47 foot Motor Life Boat (over 1500 man hours).  Renovations included upgrades to the fuel system; total renovation of the raw water system; and removal and rebuild of both main diesel engines, and other extensive repairs.  Resulted in total savings to the Coast Guard in excess of $80,000.
· Shipyard Supervisor of three engineering shops: Machinery Shop, Electrical Shop, and Hose Fabrication Shop.  Successfully mentored junior sailors; scheduled workloads; and conducted regular evaluations as well as corrective action plans to improve efficiency.
· Routinely filled in as the Engineering Officer (Lieutenant), Naval Engineering Officer (Chief Warrant Officer), and Chief Petty Officer during their absence
· Selected as a Coast Guard small boat expert to serve on the Sector Southeastern New England Ready for Operations Inspection Team.
· Budget, Procurement and Property Officer with oversight of budget; creating spend plans; procurement; and inventory of parts for maintenance and casualties.  Accountable for $500K worth of tools and equipment.  Succeeded in procuring marine repair and fabrication parts, writing contracts, planning and scheduling the removal and replacement for the shipboard crane for the USCG Cutter Hammer.
· Instructed crew on hazardous waste operations; emergency response guides; confined space entry; blood borne pathogens; PPE; hearing conservation; safe winter diving; crane operations; oxyacetylene safety; and safe boating.  Organized safety meetings, daily workloads and maintenance scheduling.
· Team Leader during the response to a contaminated vessel entering U.S. waters from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear radiation plume, resulting in the development of national policy and protocol for vessels entering U.S. waters from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear radiation zone.
·  Extensive diesel forklift experience in a shipyard setting entailing forklift of oversized loads such as: sixty-foot pilings, buoys, chain, engines, boats, boat cradles, man baskets, and numerous other delicate lifts and installations of equipment over 18,000 lbs.
· Crane operator of 64’ boom and pile driving hammer onboard a Coast Guard Construction vessel supporting the construction of over 500 fixed aid to navigation structures.
· Rigger qualified with over nine year’s military experience.  Proficient with hand signals rigging equipment, maintenance and inspection criteria.  Experience with multi-point suspension techniques to move heavy machinery, delicate electronic equipment, and ordnance equipment.  Proficient with assembly, repair, and installation of a variety of complex weight handling gear and standing and running rigging while considering factors such as size, shape, and location.  Continually test rigging gear for strength and safe working conditions.
· Experienced operator of numerous lifting and hauling equipment such as; Harlan’s, Cushman’s hydraulic trailers, Bobcats, Tool cats, and Snowplows.
· Performed emergency repair of shipyard forklift, Bobcat (during snowstorm), and travel lifting crane.  Scope of work included removal of rear axle and replacement of swivel pin; electrical troubleshooting; removal and replacement of wheel lock solenoid; troubleshooting switches; replacement of sheaves, wire rope, and hydraulic pumps.
· Overhauled ship boiler to include diffuser cone, electrodes, fuel nozzles, piping, gaskets, valves, and exhaust system.
· Removed, inspected, repaired and replaced hundreds of propulsion shafts, rudders, cutlass bearings, engines, reduction gears, turbo chargers, fuel coolers, expansion tanks, electronics, etc…
· Led the emergency repairs for Coast Guard Sector South East New England backup generator: troubleshooting; removal of defective parts; procurement of new parts; installation; and load testing.
· Trained in the use of measuring instruments for utility system repair and have utilized numerous types of special tools throughout ten year engineering career.
· Lead Honda technician for engineering department. Completed over 2000 hours of troubleshooting and maintenance on subordinate unit 25 foot Response Boats to include: replacement of outboard engine and lower units; cabin refurbishment; replacement of pumps, heaters, fans and electronic equipment.
· Assisted in the removal and installation of the #2 Main Diesel Engine (MDE) Vertical Drive on USCGC Sherman; removal and installation of USCGC Hammer’s Buoy Deck Crane; and the replacement of USCGC Hammerhead’s Starboard MDE.
· Coordinated the response to over 288 casualties to Sector SENE subordinate units, and conducted over 180 small boat availabilities and served as a troubleshooting technician over the phone for over 1000 casualties and boat alterations to over 30 vessels.
· Lead troubleshooting and repair technician for ships service generator for USCG Cutter Hammer.
· Primary electrician onboard for basic troubleshooting and repairs such as: Installing water pumps, ventilation vans, air compressor pressure switches, chill water unit, steering limit switches and engine governors and hot starts
· Heavy Lift Supervisor for over 300 safe lifts of boats and equipment weighing over 25 tons.
· Performed safety supervision for over 500 construction deck crane operations, over 300 vessel haul outs, and over 600 engine removal lifts and installations.
