three and half years articleship, as required under the Chartered Accountants
by-laws, 1983, in Taxation & Audit Departments of one of the country’s
leading firm, Riaz Ahmad & Company, Chartered Accountants, Lahore (A member
of Nexia International, a worldwide network of independent accounting and
consulting firms). My major areas of
work relate to manufacturing, financial and other concerns.
A summarized list of
work carried out is as under:
AUDIT
§ Planning audits and assignments to execute them in effective and
efficient manner by assessing system of accounting and internal controls to
evaluate risk at business, financial and operational levels.
§ Assisting and supporting clients in meeting their regulatory
requirements.
§ Extensive application of financial reporting framework including
International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and International Accounting
Standards (IAS) and preparation of financial statements in compliance
therewith. Verifying compliance with various laws and regulations including
Companies Ordinance, Income Tax Ordinance, Code of Corporate Governance and
relevant labour laws.
§ Conducting meetings/ interviewing the client to complete sections of
assigned audit work.
§ Evaluate the financial information produced by an organization.
§ Review financial statements against the evidence collected in the audit
process.
§ Determine record and test the organization’s accounting system and the
information produced.
§ Prepare and discuss internal control memorandum issued to the client.
§ Review and verification of sale and purchase procedures, revenue
recognition, budgets, grant income, audit checklists, payroll activities,
production cycle, fixed assets, investments, stores/stock in trade valuation
and finances, to ensure compliance in each area.
§ Prepare a formal audit report to assist the partners in expressing an
opinion on the truth and fairness of financial statements.
§ Developing the knowledge of junior team members through on the job
reviewing, coaching and sharing best practices on the completion of their
sections.
§ Coordinate and carry out reporting to Stakeholders (Parent Company /
Regulatory Authorities).
§ Carrying out evaluation of junior team members for appraisal purposes by
reviewing audit working papers to ensure compliance with quality control
procedures of Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan
§ Based on performance of tests of controls and substantive procedures,
highlighting the issues and preparation of other deliverables, such as
management letter identifying control weaknesses, its implications and
recommendations for improvement in accounting and internal control systems.
§ Annual and periodical stock counts of stock in trade.
TAXATION
§ Preparation of monthly/annual withholding tax statements, annual returns
of income, monthly sales tax returns and wealth statements for onward
submission to tax department both manually and electronically.
§ Computations of taxable income, income/sales tax liability and advance
income tax along with preparation of income tax memorandum charts both for
financial statement and filing purposes.
§ Correspondence with tax department for compliance of various legal and
routine notices, along with filing of applications for rectification, refund,
exemptions and approvals.
§ Complete preparation of appeals along with related documentation to be
submitted and presented before commissioner of income tax appeals and Income
Tax Appellate Tribunal.
§ Managing and arranging all tax files in the specific order maintained by
Riaz Ahmad and Company both for corporate and individual clients.
