Title: “Generalized Database Converter”
Conversion
Details
Conversion Policy
In this project
mainly conversion of all the Database Tables is considered. The reason behind
choosing only tables for conversion was that mainly in older database only
tables were the part of the database.
Main idea behind conversion:
During conversion process user selects the source Database, then depending on the source database he selects the database file of table (for dBase, FoxPro & Oracle). Upon selecting database file or table, metadata is read and depending on this metadata appropriate empty structure is prepared in target database. Once this structure is made data is read from source database and then entered in this structure. During this conversion main task is of data type mapping.
Data type
Mapping
Main task in
conversion of databases is Data type Mapping. This is required because while
converting from one database to other, if ones data type is not present in
other then this data type should be converted to compatible data type for
example in Access there is a data type ‘Number’ where as in FoxPro there is
‘Integer’, then while converting from Access to FoxPro ‘Number’ is to be
converted to ‘Integer’. If suppose one Data type is not at all supported by one
database then this data type is to be skipped. For example while converting
from Access to dBase, data type ‘Currency’ is not supported in dbase this data
type should be skipped while converting.
